Restoration Project

Restoring Lives, Building Futures

Vocational Programs

We teach traditional methods of furniture restoration to adults with mental illness, traumatic head injuries, and veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD).

The training methods we use are based on education and therapy models that improve cognitive functioning, counteract the deficits caused by neurological disorders, and facilitate recovery.

We teach participants to refinish and upholster furniture to build the confidence and work habits needed for success. In the end, the participant has created something beautiful. Furniture is part of our everyday lives. We see ourselves in its transformation.

The ingredients of our rehabilitative success at Restoration Project are:

  • A peaceful, congenial and supportive environment
  • Apprenticeships with mentor craftsmen, continual learning and problem-solving foster individual growth
  • A skilled handicraft that promotes concentration and hand/eye coordination
  • Participation and interaction within the community

We work closely with each individual to improve self-esteem, social skills, motor skills, and transferable work skills. These skills prepare program participants to go on to enjoy meaningful, fulfilling, and self-sustaining lives.

Resale Store Apprentice

Working in our adjacent resale store is typically the second step in preparation for competitive employment. Participants engage in every aspect of retail operations including receiving and processing donations, displaying and selling merchandise, and interacting with customers and donors.

Becoming Part of the Community

Community involvement is an important part of our program. Interaction with customers and volunteers gives our participants a context that helps develop the social skills and confidence to integrate into their new work environments and communities.
